Distinguished Spine Surgeon Jean
Pierre J. Elsig, M.D. of Zurich, Switzerland Presents “How
Upright™ MRI Changed My Life as a Surgeon” at FONAR
AAOS Exhibit
MELVILLE,
NEW YORK, March 24, 2006 - FONAR Corporation (NASDAQ-FONR), The
Inventor of MR Scanning™, announced today that FONAR is
exhibiting at the 2006 Annual Meeting of the American Academy
of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), March 22-24, at McCormick Place
in Chicago, Illinois. Visitors to the FONAR exhibit witness scanner
demonstrations, listen to daily presentations by users, and engage
in discussions with FONAR sales people and technical experts on
the FONAR Upright™ MRI.
FONAR’s
presentation at the AAOS meeting includes two outstanding speakers
who are giving talks throughout the meeting.
Jean
Pierre J. Elsig, M.D., an orthopedic spine surgeon in Zurich,
Switzerland, is lecturing on “How Upright MRI Changed My
Life as a Surgeon.” Dr. Elsig tells of his frustration with
pre-operative, recumbent-only MRI scans that fail to show any
spinal instabilities only to find just the opposite in the surgical
suite. The Upright MRI’s ability to scan patients in weight-bearing
positions and in flexion and extension has eliminated this frustration,
enabling him, for the first time, to correlate patient complaints,
clinical findings and imaging, all of which are necessary to achieve
surgical success.
Dr.
Elsig observed, “In the evaluation of cardiac patients,
it is, of course, preferable to obtain an EKG with the heart under
stress, that is, with the patient on a treadmill. It offers critical
information unavailable from an EKG acquired with the patient
just lying down with the heart at rest. Similarly, the UPRIGHT™
MRI provides functional information about the spine under dynamic
stress conditions, critical Information that lie-down MRIs simply
can’t supply. I need this information in order to do achieve
the best surgical results for my patients ”
Dr.
Elsig gave a dozen examples where, with the benefit of the FONAR
UPRIGHT™ MRI, he achieved surgical results far superior
to what he would have achieved had he relied on recumbent-only
MRI images.
Dr.
Elsig, an owner of a FONAR UPRIGHT™ MRI in Zurich, Switzerland,
has created a Web site (http://www.fmri.ch/e/
) that includes case studies of several of his patients who benefited
from the FONAR UPRIGHT™ MRI and, subsequently, successful
surgeries.
Professor
J. Randy Jinkins, MD, FACR, FEC, Department of Radiology Downstate
Medical Center, State University of New York, a pioneer of Position™
Imaging, spoke on “Positional MRI of the Spine: What is
Being Missed on Recumbent MRI.” Dr. Jinkins gives numerous
examples of the diagnostic superiority of the FONAR UPRIGHT™
MRI, making the point that the conventional recumbent-only MRI
misses or underestimates the dynamic nature of the spine.
Raymond
V. Damadian, president and founder of FONAR Corporation, said,
"We are delighted to be here for the third year in a row,
as AAOS is an important part of our marketing strategy. In fact,
FONAR has developed a six point marketing strategy to target five
spheres of industry influence in an effort to significantly accelerate
growth in revenue streams for MRI scanner equipment sales and
services and related revenues which are recurring in nature. The
six point marketing strategy includes initiatives in the following
areas: Advertising Campaigns; Trade Show and Industry Association
Event Participation; Third Party Endorsements in the Form of Medical
Research and Professional Testimonials; Direct Sales Efforts for
U.S. Market Penetration; Distribution Channel Utilization for
International Market Penetration; and Strategic Marketing Relationships.”
About the AAOS
The annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons
is the world's largest gathering of orthopaedic surgeons and allied
health professionals, provides members the opportunity to see
and hear the latest information on orthopaedic treatments, advances
and research, as well as trends in orthopaedics.
About FONAR
FONAR® was incorporated in 1978, making it the first, oldest
and most experienced MRI manufacturer in the
industry. FONAR introduced the world's first commercial MRI in
1980, and went public in 1981. Since its inception, FONAR has
installed hundreds of MRI scanners worldwide. Their stellar product
line includes the FONAR UPRIGHT™ MRI (also known as the
Stand-Up™ MRI), the only whole-body MRI that performs Position™
imaging (pMRI) and scans patients in numerous weight-bearing positions,
i.e. standing, sitting, in flexion and extension, as well as the
conventional lie-down position. The FONAR UPRIGHT™ MRI often
sees the patient's problem that other scanners cannot because
they are lie-down only. With nearly one half million patients
scanned, the patient-friendly FONAR UPRIGHT™ MRI has a near
zero claustrophobic rejection rate by patients. A radiologist
said, "FONAR UPRIGHT™ MRI - No More Claustrophobia
- The Tunnel Is Gone." As another FONAR customer states,
"If the patient is claustrophobic in this scanner, they'll
be claustrophobic in my parking lot." Approximately 85% of
patients are scanned sitting while they watch a 42" flat
screen TV. FONAR's latest MRI scanner is the FONAR 360, a room-size
recumbent scanner that optimizes openness while facilitating physician
access to the patient. FONAR is headquartered on Long Island,
New York, and has approximately 500 employees.
