NEW FONAR STAND-UP MRI AT ATLANTA
IMAGING CENTER -
"A GODSEND" TO VIETNAM VETERAN
MELVILLE,
NEW YORK, March 30, 2004 - FONAR Corporation (NASDAQ-FONR),
The MRI Specialist™, announced today the installation
of a FONAR Stand-Up™ MRI for Medica Stand-Up MRI, Atlanta,
Georgia. It is located at 6590 Powers Ferry Road, Atlanta, Georgia
[770-953-0108]. Located within the Interstate 285 perimeter
in the northwest section of Atlanta, the new center will service
the entire metro-Atlanta area and the surrounding counties.
One
of the first patients at Medica Stand-Up MRI was Richard J.
Feldt, a U.S. Marine veteran from Dallas, Georgia. While serving
in Vietnam, Mr. Feldt suffered the horror of being buried alive,
an experience that gave him a severe case of claustrophobia.
Because of Mr. Feldt's medical

condition, his physician wanted him to
have an MRI exam.
Wary
of his extreme difficulty with being confined in small spaces,
Mr. Feldt opted for an Open MRI as opposed to the "tunnel"
variety. But for Mr. Feldt, even a so-called open MRI was intolerable.
"I couldn't complete the exam. It was just too confining
for me," said Mr. Feldt.
When
Medica opened for business in Atlanta, Mr. Feldt hoped that the
radically different magnet design of the FONAR Stand-Up MRI would
make a difference. It certainly did. "The scanner at Medica
Stand-Up MRI is a Godsend," said Mr. Feldt. "I was able
to complete two scans since there was nothing in front of my face.
I just sat and watched the 42- inch wide screen TV. It is indeed
a medical marvel and if I need another MRI, I'll come back to
Medica Stand-Up MRI."
Medica
Stand-Up MRI is of special importance to FONAR because it is the
first where the customer went through the lengthy and painstaking
process of applying for and eventually obtaining a state-required
Certificate of Need (CON) for its proposed Stand-Up™ MRI
facility. Kay Baker, Vice President of Operations for Medica Stand-Up
MRI of Atlanta who spearheaded the CON project, said, "Although
the process of obtaining a CON was arduous, it has been well worth
it. It is very rewarding to be able to meet the medical needs
of our patients, especially ones like Mr. Feldt, who risked his
life for our country. Medica is very pleased to be able to help
the people of Atlanta with this exciting new technology."
One
of Quantum Radiology's board-certified neuroradiologists is Jay
Cinnamon, M.D., FACR, a former Director of Neuroradiology at Emory
Healthcare/Emory University School of Medicine. Dr. Cinnamon said,
"We have been open only a short time and already we have
seen where the Stand-Up™ MRI technology was able to provide
benefits for patients and clinicians in ways that could not have
been achieved with other scanners."
Robert
H. Stephenson, M.D, also a neuroradiologist and the medical director
of Medica said, "Medica has contracted with Quantum Radiology
Northwest, P.C. to interpret the exams and provide medical direction
for its imaging centers. Quantum Radiology Northwest is the largest
private radiology group in the State of Georgia. Quantum Radiology
Northwest offers radiology subspecialization, including neuroradiology
and orthopedic radiology, that is at a level comparable to or
even exceeding that which is available in large academic university
practices. We are thrilled to be able to provide this new and
beneficial service to the patients in our community."
Raymond
V. Damadian, president and founder of FONAR said, "It is
very gratifying to hear that the Stand-Up™ MRI made such
a difference to one of our country's servicemen. We congratulate
Kay Baker for the excellent job she did in obtaining a CON for
the Medica Stand-Up MRI facility. We look forward to working with
Drs. Stephenson and Cinnamon and the rest of the prestigious team
at Medica Stand-Up MRI and Quantum Radiology."
The
Stand-Up™ MRI is the world's first and only MRI scanner
that performs weight-bearing, Position™ Imaging (pMRI™),
where the patient can be scanned sitting, standing, bending, in
flexion and extension, or in the conventional recumbent position.
With Position™ Imaging, patients can be scanned in their
positions of pain or other symptoms. This allows for the detection
of pathology that could go undiagnosed on conventional MRI scanners.
