FONAR'S 23rd STAND-UP MRI INSTALLED
IN TEXAS
MEETS SPECIAL NEEDS OF CHILDREN
MELVILLE,
NEW YORK, November 18, 2003 - FONAR Corporation (NASDAQ-FONR),
The MRI Specialist, announced today the installation of
its 23rd Stand-Up™ MRI. This unit, FONAR's Upright™
imaging system, has been installed at South Texas Imaging Center,
LLC, located at 1814 East Griffing Parkway in Mission, Texas
[(956)581-9729]. South Texas Imaging Center is operated by Allan
Kapilivsky, M.D., a board-certified radiologist. Since its opening
in April 2003, the imaging center has scanned an unusually large
number of children.

"There
is nothing more distressing for a parent than a sick child,"
said Dr. Kapilivsky. "Many times a pediatrician is unable
to diagnose problems without the help of an MRI exam. This,
however, can be an intimidating experience for a child because
MRI machines can be very confining and make all kinds of loud,
disturbing noises. To make matters worse, the child may require
an injection, and very often a child requires sedation or anesthesia,
increasing risk."
"Fortunately,
at South Texas Imaging, we are a well-prepared, caring, medical
practice, with highly trained medical staff," said Dr.
Kapilivsky. "We have acquired the latest radiology technology,
the FONAR Stand-Up™ MRI. It is the only truly Open MRI
available as there is nothing in front of the child's face.
The Stand-Up™ MRI is user friendly, with a tilting table
that can accommodate patients of all sizes. The table moves
and reclines, so MRI studies can be done with the patient standing
up, sitting down or lying down, as needed. Parents are encouraged
to stay in the room with their children during the exam."
"A
most important feature of our FONAR Stand-Up™ MRI is that
only a few children require sedation or anesthesia," said
Dr. Kapilivsky. "This is possible only because of the child-friendly
nature of the FONAR Stand-Up™ MRI. To make things even
more comfortable for our little patients, we have even installed
a flat screen TV so they can watch and listen to their favorite
shows while having their studies done. This is important as
it keeps the child calm, distracted and still during the exam."
Margaret
M. Parker, M.D., FCCM, Professor of Pediatrics and Director
of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, University Hospital at
Stony Brook, Stony Brook, New York said, "We have a 14-bed
pediatric intensive care unit and 35-bed children's floor at
University Hospital. Young children are frequently required
to have an MRI exam. Children below 11 years of age usually
require anesthesia so that they will remain still. This requires
an anesthesiologist to be on hand. An MRI scanner for our pediatric
patients that would eliminate the need for and risk of anesthesia,
would be a real advantage, to both the patients and the staff."
Raymond
Damadian, president and founder of FONAR said, "The Stand-Up™
MRI has another attractive attribute, especially when scans
are made of very small children or infants. The mother can sit
in the scanner with her infant in her lap while the infant gets
scanned. This can help to avoid anesthesia which is often routine
for this age group in conventional MRI scanners."
Dr.
Kapilivsky concluded, "We invite the children of South
Texas who need an MRI to have it done on the most child-friendly
scanner available, the FONAR Stand-Up™ MRI. Please give
us a call and we will be glad to answer all of your questions
and help you in any way that we can."
